PHOTOGRAPHERS

Born in 1929 in Fukuoka, in the south of Japan, Hikaru Ushizima very quickly began to

attend the Tokyo Conservatory (Tokyo University of Music).

As a brilliant student, he was sent to Italy for a few years. Coming from a wealthy and

cultured family in Arita, a small village known for its traditional pottery, he was taught

Japanese traditions at an early age. After curious wanderings of which he does not speak (he

would have been the bottle companion of the photographer Masahisa Fukase), he eagerly

takes up photography. Hikaru Ushizima has exhibited his square-format photographs many

times in solo and group exhibitions in Europe, the United States and Japan. He is the oldest of

the chamber 5 collective, but, as he likes to repeat, “not the most senile.” He shares his life

between Paris and Biarritz where he often stays at the Hôtel du Palais.

It was Florence, his wife, who had the idea of giving the collective their room number. His

long-standing collaboration with his young friend vincentb. gave a large amount of vertical

panoramas inspired by the Kakejiku (Kakemono), Japanese painting on silk or on paper,

narrow and high, suspended vertically.
